When I fist saw this photo I thought it was some sort of odd orchid but I was wrong. It is called Mimulus pictus and also known as a Monkey Flower. It is an annual herb that is native to and endemic to California. It grows wild mostly around the southern tip of the San Juanqiuen Valley. It is included in the California Native Plant Society's Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants. Too bad, I think it's beautiful.

The Calico! :) Love it. There are many varieties of monkey flowers and we have the yellow ones around here. This one is certainly majestic. Natives used to make poultices out of them for burns.

This is crazy. Probably happens more often than one might think, but it is still a crazy story.

And then there is this different but similarly themed story.

Ain't life grand!
