#263608 A Lesson in Fractions

Posted by JoelR on 19 January 2021 - 11:25 PM

A math teacher welcomed a new French exchange student into her class and then started teaching a lesson on fractions.

The French exchange student raised his hand and said, "Excuse me Madam, but I don't know how to say fractions. How do you say those?"

"Easy," said the teacher, "you just say the top number and then the bottom number is read as an ordinal number. For example, 2/3 is 'two-thirds', 3/4 is 'three-fourths', and 2/5 is 'two-fifths'."

"Thanks, I understand, "said the exchange student.

"Good," said the teacher, and then asked the student, "so how do you say 4/8?"

"Should I reduce?" asked the boy.

"That would be best," said the teacher.

"One-second," said the boy.

"Take as long as you need," said the teacher.

I'm curious if anyone on TR has any thoughts about the shutdown of Parler, a far right social media platform?

It's still a couple of weeks early, but wanted to wish everyone a Happy December

#263337 And how was your day???

Posted by JoelR on 02 December 2020 - 09:24 PM

So I went for cataract surgery on Monday the 30th.  Had my right eye done.  Amazingly simple and painless procedure.  Took about 10 minutes if that long.  Home within an hour. Some minor soreness and stinging that ibuprofen took care of and in 24 hours the corona haze and blurriness receded and by Tues. at 10am I had 20/20 distance vision in that eye. I'm using pharmacy reading glasses until the eye finishes stabilizing and I can go for new prescription glasses for reading etc. While there was a procedure to negate the need for a lens for the right eye the left eye will always require a corrective lens.  Plus Medicare doesn't cover astigmatism correction and my medical supplement would have required a $2000.00 copay for this procedure.  I've worn glasses since I was twelve so the cost benefit relationship just wasn't there for me so I went for the monofocal lens. What's cool though is being able to watch tv without glasses and be able to read  the c/c from across the room without glasses or tilting my head to accommodate my lenses. I gotta admit I was terrified going in as the consequences of a fuck up would have been catastrophic because my left eye is kinda fucked to start with due to a detached retina issue a few years ago.  When I left for the outpatient surgicenter my BP was 127/64.  When I got there it jumped to 199/80 so yeah I get I was a little agitated, lol.  They put you in a kind of mummy wrap so you don't move around, numb the eye, give a relaxing anesthetic iv and while awake I wasn't really aware of much and felt no discomfort or pain.  When I woke up Tuesday and looked out the window of my apartment over downtown and the clarity of the sunrise and view versus before I almost started crying with relief.   If any of you are delaying this type of surgery out of fear of pain or discomfort don't do so any longer.  The results are stunning to say the least.

Congrats on the happy surgery!

Did any of you participate in Thanksgiving festivities with your family?  Or did you try to stay socially isolated?

It's definitely a great point that HIV & AIDS have cumulatively caused far more fatalities than Covid-19, but it's no longer the "topic du jour".  Part of me wonders if it's because it's highly associated with stigma and discrimination, which is incredibly unfortunate.

Keep the books, send me the men!
