Most 78 RPM records were made of shellac compounds (typally 1/3 shellac and 2/3 mineral compounds).  It wasn't until the 1930's that records began to be made from vinyl.

FYI - there were originally 5 different recording speeds for records. . .8 1/3 RPM, 16 2/3 RPM (the speed for talking books), 33 1/3 RPM (the speed for most all LP albums), 45 RPM (the speed for single play records typically utilized by AM radio stations) and 78 RPM  :thumbs up:

My family used to run a roller skating rink in the area (for many years actually) and we used to have these 45 rpm record cases that were three times taller than this example photo. We'd carry these back and forth between the rink and home to keep people from disturbing and scratching them. :love3:

I roller skated every Saturday for a good 10 years, and still have my skates (and skate key - yes, they're that old).

Makes me want to sing "I got a brand new pair of roller skates. You got a brand new key"
